(Reuters) - U.S. stocks gained on Thursday, boosted by high-flying shares of Apple and Amazon, and the Federal Reserve’s confidence in the strength of the economy as it raised rates for the third time this year. Additional news of an increase in shares for Biogen helped to calm Wall Street in light of the on-going US-China trade dispute. Biogen?s stock value rose as much as 15.7%, and was their biggest gain in over a decade. Tech stocks such as Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon, also provided a boost to the markets

  • Wall Street Bounces Back After Renewed Tariff Talks

    A week after renewed talks of a trade war with between the US and China slowed down traffic on Wall Street, stocks are getting back on track. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 338-points at mid-day trading on April 9th. Although 27 of the 30 companies that comprise the Dow are trading higher, 7-percent gains by Goldman Sachs gave the market a big boost. For the S&P 500, 10 of its 11 major sectors are also trading higher, including tech and internet stocks. Shares for Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Alphabet were all trading between 1.6 and 3-percent higher.

    According to Reuters, Apple is trading higher after releasing a robust earnings report after the closing bell. On July 31st, Apple posted their third-quarter earnings report, which beat analysts expectations, along with a fourth-quarter forecast that exceeded Wall Street's estimates. The positive report and forecast inched Apple closer to becoming the world's first trillion-dollar company, after their stock jumped almost 6-percent during early morning trading on August 1st. Apple's share price hit a record of $201.32, which helped to boost the S&P 500's tech index. But the positive quarterly report also helped other members in the FAANG group of stocks. Facebook, Netflix, Amazon, and Google's parent company Alphabet were also trading higher, but between 1-and-2 percent.

    According to Reuters, tech and internet stocks helped Wall Street recover from losses the day before. On the day for Jan. 15th, Netflix shares rose over 6-percent after announcing increased pricing for US subscribers. But gains for Netflix led to gains for Apple, Alphabet, and Amazon. Tech gains led the S&P 500's technology sector to rise by 1.5-percent, while Netflix helped boost the communication services sector by 1.7-percent. The S&P grew about 1-percent on the day, adding about 28-points.

    Reuters reports U.S. stocks across the board posted declines on Monday after President Donald Trump threatened to raise Chinese tariffs. Trump said Sunday that he would increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods from 10% to 25%. In February, Trump said the tariffs would remain at 10% as the two nations continued to make progress on trade talks. China said on Monday that a delegation still plans to go to the United States for further talks. The threat sent the S&P 500 down as much as 1.6% during the session. Apple Inc declined 2.3%, while Amazon.com Inc, Microsoft Corp and Facebook Inc fell about 1%.
