  • South Africa Prepares to Pull Out of ICC

    South Africa is preparing to withdrawal from an international court formalized by the United Nations. According to the nation's Justice Minister, a written notice has been submitted to the UN secretary general indicating their decision. The International Criminal Court was created by a treaty, known as the Rome Statute, which was brought before the UN. The ICC handles international cases of genocide, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression and war crimes. But South Africa's Justice Department stated that treaty hinders their own peace efforts. In particular, a portion that compels cooperating nations to arrest persons who have diplomatic immunity under international law.

    Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karad?i? has been found guilty of genocide over the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica and sentenced to 40 years in jail. The verdict was delivered from a United Nations tribunal 18 months after a five-year trial for Karad?i? ended. The 70-year-old, who insisted his actions were aimed at protecting Serbs during the Bosnian conflict, was found guilty of 10 out of the 11 charges he faced at the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
