Meet Muja, the World's Oldest Alligator

Description

Meet Muja the American alligator, a retirement age reptile which zookeepers at the Belgrade Zoo claim is over 80 years old! The ancient alligator has slowed down a bit after his right leg was amputated, but he has kept his appetite. Muja has seen the world change many times over - he remains the only living inhabitant of the Belgrade Zoo that managed to survive a world war, three major bombing incidents in the country's capital and the 1990's Balkans crisis.

American alligator Muja is believed to be the oldest of his kind in captivity. Reuters reports that he is good health with a hearty appetite for his age. Muja, now in his 80s, arrived at Belgrade Zoo on the eve of the Second World War, in August 1937. All his official documentation was lost in a carpet bombing of the Serbian capital by the Allies in 1944. Muja?s only health issue has been gangrene, which led to the amputation of his front right claw.
